Great Expectations

I’ve come across this great little photo documentary on the WHO (World Health Organization) website. It was a special feature called Great Expectations, arranged to coincide with World Health Day 2005, the theme of which was maternal and child health.

Featured are six mothers, sharing their experiences of pregnancy and childbirth, from different countries: Bolivia, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, the Lao People's Democratic Republic, and the United Kingdom of Great Britain. It really struck a chord, as many of these women were having their babies around the same time as I was.

I find it very interesting to contrast, through the photos, the different styles of child care. The mother from the UK was the only mother formula feeding, who lamented how she needed a routine, and was making ample use of baby gadgets. These are practices that appear to really set us apart from parents in other parts of the world, and you have to wonder if our babies are any better off.
